Burnage Foodbank Launches Winter Appeal

Burnage Foodbank is an organisation made up of local people, to support local people. For over ten years it has been providing emergency food parcels to people facing financial hardship and food insecurity.

The foodbank hopes for a world in which foodbanks do not exist, but in the meantime, it does not believe that anyone in the community should face hunger and hardship, and therefore works to provide the best service to its local community.

More Than a Foodbank

At Burnage, the team takes pride in being more than "just a foodbank". A lack of food is what brings people through the doors, but that is not where the support ends. The aim is to create a warm and welcoming space for people to sit, have a hot drink and have a friendly chat with volunteers. It also hosts a variety of support services, such as Manchester Mind, who can help people to get to the root of the issue.

Burnage Foodbank is supported by Trussell, and holds two sessions per week at St Nicholas’ Church and St Bernard’s Church. Anyone who needs support, or knows someone who does, can contact local agencies to get a referral.

Rising Need This Winter

Since the beginning of the year, the foodbank has supported 2,141 local people with emergency food, which includes 663 children. As winter approaches, with rising fuel prices and the price of heating a home, this number is expected to rise.

How to Help

The foodbank can be supported in a variety of ways: by donating food, money or time. Stocks are currently low on the following items: long-life milk, long-life juice, tinned vegetables, soup, hot drinks, and toiletries, such as shampoo and shower gel. These items can be donated at partnered supermarkets: Tesco Burnage, Tesco Levenshulme or Asda Reddish, or at the foodbank when it is open.

Financial donations help with core running costs and a more holistic service to local people. Volunteers are also welcome. Help is always needed at foodbank sessions, in the warehouse, or driving to collect donations. There are also one-off opportunities at the upcoming Winter Supermarket Collections.

Anyone who would like to donate financially or volunteer can find details from the foodbank.

The foodbank also hopes people will help raise awareness of the real situations that people are facing, and spread the word on how to make a change.

Thank you for supporting your local community.
