Hundreds of new litter bins have been installed across parks in Manchester to help make it easier for visitors to keep green spaces clean.
The replacements have been rolled out across 61 locations, including larger parks such as Boggart Hole Clough, Cringle Park and Fletcher Moss Gardens, as well as neighbourhood parks and smaller green spaces like Lees Street and Sandywell Millennium Green.
Priority was given to bins that were in the poorest condition. The new, larger capacity bins can hold significantly more waste, helping us accommodate higher levels of litter from visitors before they become full. This makes it easier for visitors to dispose of their waste responsibly and helps keep the city cleaner and greener. A total of 238 bins have been installed with larger capacity which now means each bin will be able to hold bigger quantities of waste at one time.
The new bins have been chosen to keep litter more contained and prevent it from blowing away. They also come with a locking mechanism which not only aims to discourage anti-social behaviour but make it easier for local waste teams to collect.
The need for bins in local busy parks and green spaces is rising. According to council data, parks saw 9.2 million visitors in 2024 – a 50% increase from the pre‑pandemic level of 6.1 million – alongside a 62% rise in rubbish bags collected annually, totalling an additional 65,004 bags.
As part of the roll-out, there are plans already underway to add a further 62 replacement bins in parks across Manchester.
The replacement bins mean parks and surrounding areas will be ready to service a jam-packed summer of outdoor activity in Manchester as thousands of visitors prepare for picnics, play and events.
The new investment is part of the Clean and Green project, where the council pledge to act on improving communities by tackling littering.
Councillor Lee-Ann Igbon, Executive Member for Vibrant Neighbourhoods, said:
“I’m thrilled to see the rollout of replacement and new litter bins across Manchester. The Clean and Green project has always been about investing back into our local communities, and residents and visitors consistently tell us that you want parks that are cleaner and greener. We know that littering has a significant impact on how people feel about their parks, so by installing these new bins we’re making it easier for everyone to dispose of their waste responsibly.”
