JD Gyms Launches Student-Friendly Memberships in Manchester

Google searches in the UK for ‘student gym memberships’ have increased by 715% in the past month, while searches for ‘manage university stress’ have risen by 141% in the last week. This trend highlights the growing focus on wellbeing alongside academic success among university students.

In response, JD Gyms introduced a new Student Campaign tailored specifically for Manchester students. The campaign offers exclusive membership deals and access to gym facilities, classes, and training zones throughout the academic year.

University life brings many challenges, and students often struggle to find time for self-care. Exercise is recognised as a key factor in supporting mental wellbeing, and JD Gyms has consulted with neurophysiologist and wellness strategist Dr Nerina Ramlakhan to understand the pressures students face.

Dr Ramlakhan explains, “Nowadays, students have a lot of worries at the forefront of their minds throughout their studies, which can lead to higher levels of stress in their day-to-day lives. From academic pressures and financial worries to the rise of technology, including social media and AI, students are experiencing a range of pressures that can contribute to anxiety, low mood and loneliness throughout university.”

Exercise benefits for student wellbeing

Research shows that a 10-week exercise programme can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety among university students by around 20%, demonstrating the positive impact regular physical activity can have on mental health.

Dr Ramlakhan highlights the connection between exercise, sleep, and mental health: “When you exercise at a time that works well for your body, you are more likely to sleep better, and good-quality sleep plays an important role in regulating mood, managing stress and supporting emotional wellbeing. In turn, better sleep supports brain function, energy levels and concentration.” She adds that exercise classes and gym sessions also offer valuable opportunities for students to build social connections, which can be especially important when adjusting to a new environment.

Affordable fitness options for Manchester students

Balancing university costs and academic commitments can make it difficult for students to prioritise fitness. JD Gyms’ student memberships in Manchester provide access to high-quality equipment, diverse fitness classes, and specialised training areas, enabling students to tailor their exercise routines to their schedules and budgets.

These memberships support students in maintaining physical and mental wellbeing throughout the academic year, whether through improving fitness, trying new activities, or simply taking time away from studies.
