Major Regeneration Underway at Gorton Market with New Food Hall and Community Spaces

Major regeneration works have now begun at Gorton Market, with the improvements set to deliver significant benefits for local traders, shoppers and the wider community.

The investment marks another important step in the ongoing transformation of Gorton District Centre, strengthening the market’s position as a thriving community destination and a key focal point for residents, businesses and visitors alike.

The investment will attract increased visitors who will have more to do and more reasons to stay longer, while supporting local businesses in their growth.  

The works comes after recent completion of Gorton Square earlier this year and will make better use of the new market terrace. The redone roof and installation of solar photovoltaic panels to improve the building’s green credentials were also recently added.   

A New Food Destination for Gorton 

A major highlight of the works now on site is the creation of brand-new food and beauty clusters that will create a social destination within the market. This will include: 

• 10 new food units offering a mix of affordable eating option 
• A dedicated bar area and a community event stage 
• A newsagent offering everyday supplies  

• 4 health, beauty and wellbeing units 
• A common seating area for evening opening times 

The market stalls are being revamped to accommodate a daytime family focused food offering. This area can then stay open into the evening, hosting local entertainment and community events, providing things to do on residents’ doorsteps. A glazed frontage will link the new indoor seating area to the outdoor market terrace, allowing people to use both areas. The west frontage and entrance will be much more visible and attractive. 

Complementing the food hall there will also be a new beauty zone. Again, supporting small businesses by allowing longer trading hours and clustering similar offers to pull in more visitors.  

The regeneration scheme will attract new visitors, support local jobs and businesses, and provide more choice for residents. It is set to position Gorton Market as an evolving hub for culture, food and community activity. 

All existing tenants will remain in the market and those affected are currently being relocated into newly refurbished units. This ensures continuity of business while enabling the works to take place. Disruption is being minimised to ensure traders and shoppers continue to enjoy a lively and accessible marketplace. The project has been made possible through securing external funding from the UK Government’s Local Growth Place Flexible fund.   

Supporting Local Regeneration 

The Gorton Market project forms part of a broader programme of regeneration across district centres and high streets. Investment in local infrastructure, business spaces, public spaces and community facilities are helping to create new opportunities for local people. Next in line will be the first phase in the provision of genuinely affordable and social housing. All this is part of strengthening the long-term sustainability of the neighbourhood.

Gorton Market sits at the centre of this transformation. With decades of history serving the community, the market remains a key anchor for the district, supporting small businesses, providing affordable shopping options, and acting as a meeting place for residents of all ages.

Updates on the progress of the works will be shared over the coming months as the redevelopment continues and phases are completed. The Council will keep traders, residents and visitors informed as the project moves forward.
