Primary schoolchildren from across Manchester raised £770 for FareShare Greater Manchester after selling produce they had grown themselves.
Market Street welcomed the young traders on Friday 10 July as part of Young Marketeers, a food education programme run by the charity School Food Matters.
Supported by school staff and gardeners from the programme, the children had spent the spring and summer terms growing fruit, vegetables, herbs and plants.
Despite the recent heatwaves, their harvest included onions, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes and strawberries, which they sold to members of the public throughout the day.
The children presented the £770 raised to Kuda Mangurenje from FareShare Greater Manchester.
Manchester’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Shaukat Ali, also attended the event alongside MPs Hannah Spencer and Afzal Khan. Councillor Ali’s current role has been confirmed through Manchester City Council.
Young Marketeers is designed to teach children how to grow food while helping them develop teamwork, enterprise and communication skills.
One Year 3 pupil said: “I like making money for people in need. Helping people brings unity and compassion.”
Another child said the experience had helped them become more confident when speaking to people in public.
The Young Marketeers programme is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund and OakNorth Bank.
