This announcement comes ahead of The Psoriasis Association’s Annual Conference, taking place in Manchester next week (Saturday, 20 June) – a city that has recently become ‘world-leading’ for psoriasis treatment and research.
The NIHR and AMRC scheme is awarding £37 million in funding to medical research charities to support early career researchers. It will help medical research charities continue to play a vital role in igniting research careers, building research capacity and sustaining the talent pipeline.
Melinda Spencer, Research Manager at The Psoriasis Association, said:
“We are thrilled to receive this funding to support early career researchers. It is essential that we invest in and nurture psoriasis researchers at the beginning of their careers, as our 2025–2030 research strategy is dedicated to accelerating innovative research that delivers meaningful improvements in people’s lives.”
Professor Lucy Chappell, Chief Scientific Adviser at the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and Chief Executive Officer of the NIHR, added:
“This year, NIHR is celebrating 20 years of investing in research and the development of our research workforce. Our partnerships with medical research charities have been integral to this from the start. Working together we have built research expertise and empowered experts to tackle the biggest challenges in health and care, ensuring that breakthroughs in key areas continue to reach the people who need them most.
“Through this £37 million investment, we will support hundreds of early-career researchers across England, creating our research leaders of the future.”
Early career psoriasis researchers will be under the spotlight once again at the Psoriasis Association’s annual conference, which will bring leading researchers, healthcare professionals and people living with psoriasis to Manchester to explore the latest breakthroughs and future solutions for the condition.
Speakers from UK universities, global research institutions and the patient community will share the latest developments in treatment, research and patient support. The event is open to everyone with an interest in psoriasis, including people living with the condition, healthcare professionals, academics and dermatology specialists.
The event’s speaker line-up is packed with leading psoriasis experts working in Greater Manchester, including:
Professor Darren Ashcroft – Foundation Chair in Pharmacoepidemiology, University of Manchester
Dr Elise Kleyn – Honorary Consultant Dermatologist and Clinical Senior Lecturer, The University of Manchester and Consultant Dermatologist, Greater Manchester Psoriasis Service.
Dr Roxana-Maria Rujan PhD – Psoriasis Priority Setting Partnership researcher, University of Manchester.
Helen Young, MB, ChB, PhD, FRCP – Senior Lecturer in Dermatology at The University of Manchester and Consultant Dermatologist, Greater Manchester Psoriasis Service.
Dr Heber Bright PhD – PhD student, University of Manchester (studentship funded by The Psoriasis Association)
Dr Hamish Hunter – Consultant Dermatologist at the Salford Care Organisation, and Director of Dermatology and Chair of the Greater Manchester Dermatology Clinical Network.
The conference aims to inspire collaboration, share the latest research and offer hope to the millions affected by psoriasis across the UK.
