Manchester is preparing to get on its bikes as June marks the return of Manchester’s Month of Cycling.
A key part of Manchester City Council’s City of Cycling initiative, the month-long programme will celebrate cycling across the city, encouraging residents of all ages and abilities to get involved, explore new routes and enjoy the many benefits of travelling by bike.
From new learners taking their first tentative pedals, to people wanting to shift to a greener way of travel, to showcasing how cycling can become part of our everyday lives, there will be a host of exciting things everyone will be able to take part in.
Over the past five years Manchester has seen a huge amount of investment into creating more, and improving existing cycling infrastructure.
Manchester now boasts the longest protected cycleway in Greater Manchester, with the 6km-long Chorlton to Manchester Cycleway, the Oxford Road corridor regularly sees upwards of 1 million journeys each year, and tens of thousands of people have begun to cycle more regularly.
These events include:
- Cycle training and introductory lessons
- Bike maintenance and repair
- Cycling for women and girls
- Cycling for under 5s
- LGBTQ+ cycling events
- Led rides around Manchester
Councillor Mandie Shilton Godwin, Executive Member for Clean Air, Environment and Transport, said:
“There has never been a better time for Mancunians to get into cycling. Over the past few years a huge amount of work has gone into improving our cycling landscape. From physical changes on our roads through new cycle lanes and better crossing points, to education and support for people who may not have ridden a bike before.
“But we want to do more, and go further. This is why I’d urge people to get involved with Manchester’s Month of Cycling, connect with like-minded people and help build our city’s burgeoning cycling community.”
