Manchester’s Moonlit Miles Brings Community Together for Winter Running

A large group of runners, some in reflective gear, celebrate at night with their hands raised, holding a banner that reads "RUN MCR More Than Just A Run Club."

More than 350 people took part in the latest Moonlit Miles running event in Platt Fields Park last week to celebrate keeping active in the winter months.

With daylight hours in short supply and winter approaching, the event organised by Manchester Parks in partnership with the running community, aimed to bring experienced runners and people starting out on their running journey together the confidence and support to stay active and enjoy running safely through the long winter nights.

The park route staffed by volunteer saw people running the 3k route around the park in one of a series of running waves wearing free head torches, available for participants to wear and take home, helping them to stay visible on runs throughout the darker winter months.

Councillor Basat Sheikh, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods said:

“This is more than a running event it is about empowering women and girls to stay active through the winter months, as this is what they have told us matters to them, and of course it is also about bringing a sense of community among people whatever stage they're at in their running journey. The first event was a great success, and we've brought it forward to the beginning of the winter months to bring greater awareness of running safety."
